Why the Offsides Rule Exists

The offsides rule prevents players from waiting near the opponent’s net and forces teams to advance the puck and skaters together through the neutral zone.

At its core, the rule is simple:

The puck must be the first thing into the offensive zone.

The Blue Line & the Offensive Zone

Understanding the blue line is essential.

The blue line separates the neutral zone from the offensive zone.
The puck is considered in the offensive zone only when it completely crosses the blue line.
A skater is considered in the zone when both skates fully cross the blue line.

Golden Rule: The puck must completely cross the blue line before any attacking player enters the zone.

Official Definition (NHL – Plain Language)

In the NHL, a play is offsides when both of an attacking player’s skates completely cross the leading edge of the blue line into the offensive zone before the puck fully crosses that same line.

Key clarifications:

Skates determine offsides — not the stick
A player is onside if:
- At least one skate is still touching the blue line, or
- The player is in the neutral zone when the puck enters

If either skate is still on or above the blue line when the puck crosses, the play is legal.

What Causes Offsides

1. Entering the Zone Too Early

A skater crosses the blue line before the puck.
Even if it’s unintentional or only one skate is barely over the line, it is offsides.

2. Carry-Ins vs Dump-Ins

Onside (Legal):

The puck is carried, passed, or dumped across the blue line first.

Offsides (Illegal):

A skater enters the zone first and then dumps or passes the puck in.

This is why you’ll often hear teammates yell “WAIT!”, “HOLD!”, or “STAY ONSIDE!” at the blue line.

Delayed Offsides

Delayed offsides occurs when:

One or more attacking players are already inside the offensive zone before the puck,
But no attacking player touches the puck.

In a delayed offsides situation:

Play continues temporarily
The attacking team must tag up by exiting the zone
If the puck is touched before everyone clears, the whistle stops play

Delayed offsides is a warning — not a free play.

Tagging Up (Getting Back Onside)

To reset play after offsides or delayed offsides:

All attacking players must exit the offensive zone
Both skates must fully cross back over the blue line
Once everyone has tagged up, the puck can legally re-enter the zone

You do not need to skate to center ice — just fully clear the zone.

Where the Faceoff Happens After Offsides

When offsides is called, play restarts with a neutral-zone faceoff
The faceoff is taken at the dot closest to where the offsides occurred

Repeated offsides slow the game and remove scoring opportunities.

Common Myths About Offsides

“One skate is okay.” ❌ Not exactly. A player may drag their back skate and remain onside as long as that skate is still touching the blue line when the puck enters.
“It was accidental.” ❌ Intent does not matter.
“I didn’t touch the puck.” ❌ The team must still tag up.
“I crossed for just a second.” ❌ Timing doesn’t change the rule.

Tips for Staying Onside

Watch the puck, not just your skates
Delay at the blue line when unsure
Give the puck carrier space to enter first
Curl back into the neutral zone instead of drifting forward
Trust teammates yelling warnings — they often have the best angle

Is the puck in yet?
Am I giving the puck carrier room?
Can I wait one second?
